COMMON QUESTIONS REGARDING WHIPLASHQ: I was in a car accident & felt some pain in my neck & shoulders. I went to the emergence room & the technician there told me that I was ok & the pain would go away. Later, I found out that I did in fact have a whiplash injury. Why didn't the E.R. technician discover it?A: Most emergency room personnel are not trained to recognize structural trauma & can not identify this type of damage. Doctors of Chiropractic, however, are specially trained in recognizing soft tissue injuries to the back & neck. Q: I felt fine after my accident, however later that evening, I became nauseous & developed persistent indigestion; why is this? A: It is quite possible that even though you don't feel pain in your neck & shoulders there may still be pressure in the nerves of your neck, which may cause digestive problems. If this is the case, once the pressure is removed from the nerves, the symptoms will subside. To determine if nerve pressure is the cause of your digestive problems, you should have a spinal examination. Q: If I sustained a neck injury in the past, but am not currently pained by it, is it necessary for me to be examined by a chiropractor? A: Yes. Although symptoms may not be present at this time, there still may be pressure on the nerves in the neck, which can result in painful problems later. In addition, research shows that untreated misalignments that result from a sprain/strain injury are more likely to develop arthritis than properly aligned vertebrae. It would be in your best interest to have a spinal exam to prevent future problems.
